Southland Dodge was opened in July 1968 by Joe Teuton Jr., Jeff Teuton, and Dennis Oncale. Joe and Dennis were experienced auto technicians at Downtown Auto Service on Lafayette St, and Jeff was a college graduate in Business Administration from Southeastern Louisiana University. They were also avid drag racers, and they were all under 30 years of age. The first location at 505 Sunset Ave featured a one-car showroom and a 10 car parking lot. Their racing background helped them to sell lots of Dodge Superbees, Chargers, and Challengers in the early years.
In 1972 they moved to 1119 Barrow St (Currently Bluewater Rubber and Gasket), and sales increased dramatically. During the 1970’s, the hot selling vehicles were pickup trucks and full size vans. In 1978 they bought Chrysler and Plymouth franchises, and they relocated to the current location at 6161 West Park Ave. Sales increased again with the help of a strong oilfield based economy.
Southland Dodge survived the oilfield downturn of the 1980’s by selling lots of pickup trucks, factory “program cars”, minivans, and at one point was the largest Ram Charger SUV dealer in the world. From 1982-1993 International trucks were also sold from the location. A collision center was added in 1982 at the original sunset Ave location.
During the 1990’s the location was enlarged by a showroom addition, a used car building, and a racing building. In 2007 the Jeep franchise was acquired and in 2016 the Fiat franchise was added. Southland dodge Chrysler Jeep currently has approximately 65 employees and sells 1500 new and used vehicles annually.
